Manuscripts on Wisconsin history collected by Mr. and Mrs. Spengler of Menasha, Wisconsin. Included are: Charles A. Grignon papers, 1827-1855, consisting chiefly of letters from Richard Chute, Rev. Florimond J. Bonduel, Henry Dodge, James Duane Doty, Theresa Juneau, and John F. Meade, relating to Wisconsin Territorial matters; Solomon Juneau papers, 1836-1852, consisting of a small group of business items, land and property transfers, and hardware accounts with L. J. Farwell and Company in Milwaukee and William Farnsworth in Fond du Lac; Elisha Morrow papers, 1837-1849, consisting of scattered personal and business letters, some correspondence commenting on the defeat of the proposed Wisconsin constitution in 1847, and assorted way-bills of the Morrow and White Stage line between Green Bay and Fond du Lac.

Juneau, Solomon Laurent, 1793-1856

Laurent Solomon Juneau, fur trader and founder of the city of Milwaukee, was born in 1793 in Montreal. In 1821 he settled in Milwaukee where he engaged in the fur trade. Juneau also became first postmaster and mayor of Milwaukee. He later died in poverty and debt while attending meeting to settle Indian payments in 1856. Doty, James Duane, 1799-1865

James Duane Doty (1799-1865) was a lawyer, judge, and government official. He represented Wisconsin in Congress between 1838 and 1841, and again between 1849 and 1853.
